Iraqi Forces Arrest 17 Terrorism Suspects

Aug. 10, 2010 - Iraqi security forces working with U.S. advisors arrested 17 terrorism suspects in operations in Iraq yesterday and today, military officials reported.

Near Abu Ghraib today, Iraqi forces arrested a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member believed to have close ties to the organization's senior leadership, along with eight alleged criminal associates.

Near Mosul yesterday, Iraqi forces and U.S. advisors stopped a vehicle in hopes of apprehending a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member believed to be responsible for facilitating the travel of foreign suicide bombers into the city and directly financing vehicle-borne bombing attacks. Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest three suspected criminal associates.

Today, Iraqi forces and U.S. advisors searched several buildings in an effort to apprehend the same suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member. Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest five suspected criminal associates of the wanted man.
