Troops in Afghanistan Detain Militants, Find Weapons

KABUL, April 14, 2010 - Afghan and international forces detained several suspected militants and seized weapons stockpiles in recent Afghanistan operations, military officials reported.

-- An Afghan-international force pursuing a Haqqani terrorist network facilitator in Ghazni province detained two suspected militants this morning.

-- In Paktia province's Orgun district last night, a combined force detained a few suspected militants for further questioning after a search prompted by intelligence information.

-- Afghan forces in Kabul province's Bagrami district found 34 rocket-propelled grenades yesterday.

-- In Helmand province's Nad-e Ali district yesterday, an Afghan civilian turned in a homemade bomb containing more than 10 pounds of explosives to members of the International Security Assistance Force.

-- Also yesterday, an Afghan army patrol in the Muqer district of Ghazni province found a homemade bomb consisting of two rocket-propelled grenades, a 72 mm artillery shell and homemade explosives.

-- In Paktika province's Zarghun Shahr district yesterday, an Afghan patrol found a bomb made from four 100 mm artillery rounds. An ISAF explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed it.

No shots were fired, and no Afghan civilians were harmed during these operations, officials said.
